Afterglance

Terms of Use

The short version. Afterglance shows you paintings and lets you talk with them. The paintings are real; their replies are written by an AI and are imaginative, not scholarship. Patron is an auto-renewing subscription sold through Apple, Google Play, or our web checkout. You manage it through the same provider you used to buy it.

1. Agreement

By downloading the app or using the Afterglance website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service. Afterglance is made and operated by Grappes LLC ("we", "us").

2. What Afterglance is

Afterglance is a way of meeting works of art one at a time. It shows you a painting, tells you something true about it, and lets you linger or move on. It is a companion to looking, not a catalogue, a course, or a substitute for a museum.

3. The paintings' replies are written by an AI

When you talk with a painting, the reply is generated by a large language model (Claude, by Anthropic) speaking in the artwork's voice. This means:

4. The free tier and Patron

Afterglance is free to use, with daily limits of five full encounters and one rewind, access to three galleries, one complimentary painting conversation, and the opening wing of the Grand Tour. A Patron subscription removes those limits, opens every gallery, and unlocks the full Grand Tour.

5. Billing, renewal, and cancellation

Patron is offered as an auto-renewing subscription at the following prices, which may vary by region and are always shown to you in your local currency before you buy:

The subscription renews automatically for the selected period until you cancel it. The checkout shows the amount, currency, billing interval, and any applicable tax before you confirm.

Deleting the app does not cancel Patron. Refund requests are handled under the policy of the provider that sold the subscription. Use of the iOS app is also governed by Apple's Standard End User License Agreement.

6. Acceptable use

Please do not attempt to break, overload, or abuse the service; to extract the underlying model or use it as a general-purpose assistant; to submit unlawful content; or to scrape the app's content in bulk. We may limit or end access that does these things.

7. Artwork and intellectual property

Artwork images and metadata come from Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and museum records. Many works are in the public domain; others may be available under a stated licence or subject to rights that vary by country. Source and credit links are available in the app where supplied. The app's own writing, design, code, and name belong to us or our licensors and are not yours to copy.

8. Availability

Afterglance depends on services we do not control, including app stores, RevenueCat, payment providers, Anthropic, and Wikimedia. Features may change or stop working. We may modify or discontinue the service; any refund for unused paid time is handled under the policy and law applicable to the provider that sold the subscription.

9. Disclaimers

The app is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or historically accurate.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
